Patisserie Valerie all started with Theophile Vermeirsch who was born in Antwerp in 1898. He came to London with his family as refugees in the First World War, during which time he worked as a pastry chef. He returned to Belgium but soon found himself back in London’s fashionable Soho area where he opened the first Patisserie Valerie in 1926 .
